The Story Behind ShooFly Pie™
Living in Pennsylvania Dutch country, horses and buggies are simply part of everyday life.
At Firehouse Coffee, it isn’t unusual to see Mennonite families pull into our roastery, tie their horses out back and stop inside for fresh coffee. It’s one of the things that makes our community unique, and over the years, we’ve come to appreciate the traditions that have been passed down through generations.
One of those traditions is the famous shoofly pie.
Made with rich molasses and a sweet crumb topping, shoofly pie has been a Pennsylvania Dutch favorite for generations. One popular story says freshly baked pies were placed outside to cool, where their sweet molasses aroma attracted hungry flies. Bakers would wave their hands or towels to “shoo” the flies away, giving the dessert its unforgettable name.
We wanted to capture that hometown favorite in a cup.
Freshly Roasted Pennsylvania Dutch Coffee
We begin with premium 100% Arabica coffee beans, freshly roasted in small batches in Maxatawny, Pennsylvania. After roasting, the beans are flavored with rich molasses, brown sugar and sweet vanilla breakfast cake.
The result is a smooth and aromatic dessert-inspired coffee with the comforting flavor of an old-fashioned shoofly pie.
